The season began with us holding our first two meetings in the church. The first meeting was changed at the last minute as the booked speaker had to travel from east Kent and was concerned about the lack of fuel. (We have now booked her for the first meeting next season). In her place we were fortunate to have Alan Berridge, one of our members give us a presentation of Churchill and Chartwell. This had been planned for next February but was brought forward.
Our second lecture was b y Bill Harmsworth MBE JP on the subject Horley Motor Car. He traced the history of the car and company and subsequent companies that occupied the building by the Shell garage by the Chequers in Horley from the last 1800’s to the present day.
Our next lecture on Monday 1st November will be in the Upper Hall with Jim Buttress the well-known gardeners and radio personality. His website says: Jim is a natural speaker who is equally at home talking to large audiences and small gardening clubs. He regularly co-hosts the gardening show “Dig It” on BBC Radio Surrey/Sussex.
His stories are always interesting and amusing. He recounts his interactions with the late Queen Mother, his life managing the Central Royal Parks and as an RHS judge. His wealth of knowledge on horticulture is boundless, which he passionately shares with his audience.
The following lecture on 15th November has the subject “COME FLY WITH ME an odd thing happened today at the airport !”International airports are fascinating places to pass through. Neil Sadler returns to tell us about what happens if you work at one……especially as a police officer at Britain’s second busiest airport, London Gatwick.
We look forward to seeing you at these and subsequent lectures. For the whole season’s lectures pick up a programme from the Vestibule of look on the website https://redhillurc.org.uk/church-life/literary/ . The cost of membership this season is £10 or if you come as a visitor £3.00 per lecture.
